What is a GFCI and do I need one?

You may have seen an electrical outlet with a “test” and “reset” button in the middle — this is a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet. It is a technology that gives you electrocution protection in wet environments, since getting an accidental shock can be deadly when you are wet.

This is why GFCI outlets are required in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, crawl spaces, outdoors and any areas where a water source is present. If you are missing a GFCI in any of these areas, replacing just one existing outlet with a GFCI outlet will protect the entire circuit.
