• Do I need a special electrical box to install a ceiling fan?

    Not always!

While it is true that your ceiling fan is an active load heavier than most light fixtures, often you can screw the ceiling fan support bracket directly into the structural wood just outside of the existing electrical box.

However, if the structural wood does not sit in line with your electrical box, then you do indeed need to replace your standard ceiling box with a code-required “fan-rated” box, since the mounting screws are thicker for handling the weight and vibration that a ceiling fan needs.

  • Why do my lights flicker?

One of the common signs you’re dealing with an electrical connection issue is when you start experiencing flickering lights.

It could be caused by a faulty light bulb or light socket. If its multiple lights flickering it could be a faulty switch, dimmer or circuit breaker, or even wiring issues. And sometimes it’s a utility event or weather event.

You can try changing the flickering lightbulb, contacting your utility company or schedule an electrician visit.

  • What should I do if an appliance continuously trips the breaker?

First, make sure there are not too many appliances plugged into one circuit, as this can overload it.

If there is just one appliance tripping, try swapping it for another appliance or simply use a blow dryer. If the blow dryer works at full heat and sounds normal, then it’s likely your appliance. Call an appliance technician.

If the blow dryer trips the breaker, then it could be a faulty circuit breaker or an issue with the circuit in general. A qualified technician can troubleshoot the problem for you.
